About The Garage

The Pilates Garage is a sunny little space in downtown San Marcos.

The Pilates Garage Is Special

In the heart of downtown San Marcos, in what was once a garage apartment, is a true Pilates gym where clients can learn Joe’s method in private sessions, with a friend, or virtually.

The studio no longer looks like a garage, but is equipped with reformers, wunda chairs, wall towers, high mats, a Cadillac, and a ladder barrel. Each piece crafted by Balanced Body/ Contrology to re-create the functionality of a Pilates studio of the 60s or 70s. It supports and challenges just where you need it. I never get tired of the “sproing-y” noises of springs being worked.

Pilates changes me.

It will change you too.

Expect Change

At The Pilates Garage you will find a self-directed, mindful practice that spills into your everyday activities. Once you get Pilates in your body, expect to see changes in balance, coordination, strength, range of motion, and self confidence- to name a few. I vividly remember the first time I bent to pick up laundry and realized my persistent back pain was gone. This kind of celebration is a way of life when you have a Pilates practice. Book a session and let’s celebrate together.

Hi, I’m Michelle Carter. I discovered the power of Pilates as a twenty-something in 2000, from the only source I could find: a book! I kept a tattered equipment catalog on my bookshelf for years, dreaming of finding a Pilates equipment studio where I could learn with others.

This studio is the realization of that dream.

I Chose Traditional For a Reason

I am comprehensively certified through Balanced Body, am Barre Above certified, and am currently in a classical mentorship and so have experience in both classical and contemporary styles of teaching. However, when I practice Pilates I usually choose to use the traditional order and supporting apparatus. It is the undercurrent beneath everything I do, even when I experiment with new things.

It gets right at the needs of my body: one movement flowing perfectly into the next. It keeps me strong, flexible, and injury-free for all the other physical things I enjoy doing. It also gives me a “next step” to look forward to. It has been so life-changing for me that I feel I can’t give my clients anything less.
